How to Build an 8th Grade Portfolio

A portfolio is a collection of your best artistic endeavors and can be used for employment or schools. If you are in middle school and applying to a visual arts high school, check admissions requirements first. Each program has a different set of portfolio admissions requirements. Some schools ask for only 10 pieces of artwork in a specific focus or medium, while other programs want to see work in drawing, painting and other mediums. Build an 8th grade portfolio with the most outstanding original art you can create.

Instructions

    • 1

Work on art assignments from your middle school art class. Most schools follow national curriculums, which include the type of work visual arts high schools like to see. To build a stunning portfolio, you need to create the best art you can. Work on class art assignments as well as your own artwork in your preferred medium.

Use a personal sketchbook for drawing. Many schools require students to include a sketchbook when applying to a visual arts program. A sketchbook shows the admissions department how the student thinks creatively and his drawing skills. A sketchbook is a visual diary and should contain drawings, notes for larger work or even writing.

Ask your middle school art teacher or mentor for advice. She will know your work best and understand the application process. She will help direct your work into areas which display your artistic strengths, and she can help you decide which art work should be included in your portfolio.

Shoot your chosen artwork with a digital camera. Use the fine setting on the camera to get the highest quality photographs. Upload the pictures onto your home computer.

    • 5

Record all the digital photographs of your artwork onto a CD-R. View all the pictures with your art teacher or other mentor who is helping you with the application process. Choose the work that the admissions department requires and that depicts your strengths as an artist.

Upload the portfolio on another CD-R to send to a particular school. Each school has different requirements; change each portfolio to cater to each application. Print a title list on a separate piece of paper to list each work of art.
