How to Square a Number on the Standard Calculator

Standard or basic calculators possess simple mathematical functions to ease daily math, aiding in common calculations like addition and division. A number's square is the product that results from raising the number to its second power. Squares of numbers are useful and necessary values in higher math, with square calculation usually having its own dedicated key on scientific calculators. Though standard calculators typically do not possess such a key, you can still calculate the square of a number on them by multiplying the number to itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the number to be squared with the number keypad. For an example, press the "1" and "2" keys to enter the number 12.

    • 2

Press the "---" key to input the multiplication function.

    • 3

Enter the same number again. For this example, press the "1" and "2" keys to enter 12.

    • 4

Press the "=" or "Enter" key to finish the calculation and display it on the calculator's screen. Concluding the example, the screen would display "144."
