How to Determine Percent Inclines

The percentage incline measures how much a slope goes up as a percentage of the horizontal distance it covers. An incline is determined by the rise over the run, so to find the percentage increase you have to multiply the rise over the run by 100. A percentage over 100 means that the slope is going up more than 1 foot for every foot it traverses horizontally. The higher the percentage include, the more energy it takes to climb.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the vertical change on the calculator. For example, if a road increased in elevation by 1,000 feet over a 5,000 foot stretch, enter "1,000."

    • 2

      Push the division sign.

    • 3

Enter the horizontal change on the calculator. For example, if a road increased in elevation by 1,000 feet over a 5,000 foot stretch, enter "5,000."

    • 4

Push the multiplication sign. When you push it, the calculator will compute the incline as a decimal. In this example, when you push the multiplication sign, the calculator will display 0.2.

    • 5

Enter "100" and push the equals sign to have the calculator display the percent incline. Completing this example, when you enter "100," push the equals sign, the calculator will show 20, meaning the road has a 20 percent incline.
