How to Determine Percent Difference on Calculators

A percentage difference represents the change in relation to your starting amount. Using percentage rather than numbers to represent the change gives your audience a context for the amount of the increase or decrease. For example, if you said your stock portfolio sustained a loss of $13,000 last year, that would be a substantial loss if you only had $45,000 invested. However, if you had $700,000 invested, the loss would not be as bad.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the final amount in the calculator. For example, if you wanted to calculate the percentage increase from 14 to 23, enter "23."

    • 2

      Push the subtraction sign.

    • 3

Enter the original amount. In this example, enter "14."

    • 4

Push equals sign. Since the next step is multiplication, you need to push the equals sign so that calculator knows to compute the subtraction first. In this example, the calculator will display 9.

    • 5

      Push the division sign.

    • 6

Enter the original amount. In this example, enter "14."

    • 7

Push the multiplication sign, then enter 100 and push the equals sign to convert the change from a decimal to a percentage. In this example, the calculator will display 64.28571428571429, meaning an increase from 14 to 23 equals an increase of about 64.29 percent.
