How to Convert G to MG on a Calculator

The metric system uses the gram, or g, as a unit of measuring mass. Metric prefixes used with the gram include the milligrams, or mg, which is smaller than a gram, and the megagrams, or Mg, which is larger than a gram. The prefix "milli-" represents 0.001, so there are 1,000 mg per gram. The prefix "mega-" represents 1,000,000, so it takes 1 million g to equal just 1 megagram. Having a calculator makes the conversions even easier.

Instructions

  1. Grams to Milligrams

    • 1

Enter the number of grams. For example, if the mass equals 34 g, enter "34."

    • 2

      Push multiplication sign.

    • 3

Enter "1,000" because each gram equals 1,000 mg.

    • 4

Push "Enter" or "=" to have the calculator display the amount in milligrams. In this example, the calculator will display "34,000."

    Grams to Megagrams

    • 5

Enter the number of grams. For example, if the mass equals 55,000 g, enter "55,000."

    • 6

      Push the division sign.

    • 7

Enter "1,000,000" because it takes 1 million grams to equal 1 megagram.

    • 8

Push "Enter" or "=" to have the calculator display the conversion to megagrams. In this example, the calculator will display "0.055," meaning 55,000 g equals 0.055 megagrams.
