How to Convert to Kilocalories

Kilocalories, abbreviated kcal, measure heat energy. The kilocalorie is the same as one Calorie, with a capital "C," it but is 1,000 times larger than one calorie, with a small "c." If you have multiple measurements of heat energy, such as British thermal units (btu), foot-pounds, or joules (J), converting each of the measurements to kilocalories allows you to compare the size of each value. When you know the conversion factors, the calculations are easy.

    • 1

Multiply the number of calories by 0.001 to convert to kilocalories. For example, if you have 498 calories, divide 498 by 1,000 to get 0.001 kcal.

    • 2

Divide number of joules by 4,186.8 to convert to kilocalories. For example, if you have 3,240 J, divide 3,240 by 4,186.8 to convert to 0.77 kcal.

    • 3

Divide the number of foot-pounds by 3.088 to convert to kilocalories. For example, if you have 45 foot-pounds, divide 45 by 3.088 to get 14.57 kcal.

    • 4

Divide the number of btu by 3.9683 to convert to kilocalories. For example, if you have 48 btu, divide 48 by 3.9683 to get 12.10 kcal.

    • 5

Divide the number of kwh by 0.001163 to convert to kilocalories. For example, if you have 9 kwh, divide 9 by 0.001163 to get 7,738.61 kcal.
