How to Convert Electricity Units to KWH

Many different units of electrical power are used in today's world. The kilowatt hour, abbrevaited kWh, KWH or kw hr, is common in measuring commercial electrical use. However, if you want to measure the power consumption of different items, you need to convert all of the measurements to a common unit. For example, if you have measurements in units like British thermal units (Btu), Calories or megajoules (MJ), you need to convert them to a common unit to compare the different amounts.

Divide the number of watt hours by 1,000 to convert to kWh. For example, if you have 1,400 Wh, divide 1,400 by 1,000 to get 1.4 kWh.

    • 2

Divide the number of megajoules of energy by 3.6 to convert to kWh. For example, if you have 15 MJ, divide 15 by 3.6 to get 4.17 kWh.

    • 3

Divide the number of Btu by 3,412.141 to convert to kWh. For example, if you have 5,300 Btu, divide 5,300 by 3,412.141 to get 1.47 kWh.

    • 4

Divide the number of Calories by 859.846 to convert to kWh. For example, if you have 1,500 Calories, divide 1,500 by 859.846 to get 1.74 kWh.

    • 5

Divide the number of foot pounds by 2.655 million to convert to kWh. For example, if you have 10 million foot pounds, divide 10 million by 2.655 million to get 3.77 kWh.
