How to Convert kWh to GWh

Kilowatt hours, or kWh, and gigawatt hours, or GWh, measure electrical energy. The base unit is the watt hour, and the prefixes "kilo" and "giga" represent 10^3 and 10^9, respectively. Since 10^9 is 1 million times larger than 10^3, it takes 1 million kWh to equal 1 GWh. Given this conversion factor, you can use either multiplication or division to convert kilowatt hours to gigawatt hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the number of kilowatt hours by 1 million to convert to gigawatt hours. For example, if you have 5,900,000 kWh, divide 5,900,000 by 1,000,000 to get 5.9 GWh.

    • 2

Multiply the number of kilowatt hours by 0.000001 to convert to gigawatt hours. In this example, you will multiply 5,900,000 by 0.000001 to get 5.9 GWh.
