How to Convert Force to Kilowatts

Kilowatts, abbreviated kW, is a measure of power, often used in measuring electrical power. Other units of power include watts, megawatts, gigawatts, horsepower and foot-pounds per second. Since so many units for power exist, to compare power usage you may have to convert between different units. For example, you may need to convert from watts to kilowatts in order to compare the power usage of different devices.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the number of watts by 1,000 to convert to kilowatts. For example, if you have 5,410 W, divide 5,410 by 1,000 to get 5.41 kW.

    • 2

Divide the number of horsepower by 1.341022 to convert to kilowatts. For example, if you have 40 hp, divide 40 by 1.341022 to get 29.83 kW.

    • 3

Divide the number of foot-pounds per second by 737.562 to convert to kilowatts. For example, if you have 950 foot-pounds per second, divide 950 by 737.562 to get 1.29 kW.

    • 4

Multiply the number of megawatts by 1,000 to convert to kilowatts. For example, if you have 5.89 MW, multiply 5.89 by 1,000 to get 5,890 kW.

    • 5

Multiply the number of gigawatts by 1,000,000 to convert to kilowatts. for example, if you have 14.2 GW, multiply 14.2 by 1 million to get 14,200,000 kW.
