How to Convert BHPs to Kilowatts

Power is the ability to do a certain amount of work in a given time. Horsepower is the standard unit of power used in the United States, while the metric system measures power in terms of kilowatts. You can use horsepower and braking horsepower interchangeably, as they both convey the same unit of measure but are arrived at using different methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Establish the amount of braking horsepower you wish to convert to kilowatts.

    • 2

Multiply the amount of braking horsepower by 0.7456999 to convert to kilowatts.

      Example: 200 bhp x 0.7456999 = 149.13998 kilowatts (kW)

    • 3

Divide your answer by 0.7456999 to check your calculations. If you arrive at your original number of braking horsepower then you have properly done your calculations.
