Joules and kilocalories are units of energy. The joule is the International System of Units' measurement for energy, and equals the force of one newton moving an object one meter. The kilocalorie is equal to 1,000 calories. The joule is abbreviated J, while the kilocalorie is abbreviated kcal. If you have an energy measurement in joules, but want to report it for energy on a nutrition label, you would want to convert it to a measurement in kilocalories.
