How to Calculate the Perimeter of a Rectangular Cube

To measure the perimeter of a cube, begin with its universal definition. A cube is a three-dimensional structure with six square sides. The sides each meet adjacent sides at 90-degree angles. The points where three sides converge are called vertices. Cubes are symmetrical, and all faces of a cube have the same linear and area measurements. A measurement of the perimeter of an object is generally considered to be the distance around the outer margin of the object, measured at its base or other designated horizontal plane. Calculating the perimeter of a cube is simple, as cubes are regular in shape.

Things You'll Need

  • Appropriate linear measuring instrument (micrometer, ruler, yardstick, tape measure)

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cube on a flat surface so two square facets of the cube are horizontal.

    • 2

Measure the length of one edge of the cube, between two adjacent vertices.

    • 3

Multiply the measured length by four to calculate the perimeter of the cube.
