How to Calculate the Perimeter of a Two-Dimensional Figure

A two-dimensional object is any object that is flat. For example, if you draw a shape on a piece of paper, then it is two dimensional. This means it only has the dimensions of height and length. It does not have the third dimension of depth, or width. The perimeter is the distance around the figure. In other words, it is how far you would need to walk in order to walk all the way around the object.

    • 1

Measure each side of the object. For example, assume you have a rectangle and the sides measure 4 inches, 5 inches, 4 inches and 5 inches.

    • 2

Make your measurements into an equation by adding a + between each number. In the example, you would have 4 inches + 5 inches + 4 inches + 5 inches.

    • 3

Solve your addition equation. In the example, 4 inches + 5 inches + 4 inches + 5 inches equals 18 inches.
