How to Figure Geometric Dimensions

The term "dimension" refers to a measurement of an object in one direction. For example, the height, width and length of a rectangular box are all three dimensions of the same thing. When we calculate dimensions, all that really requires is being able to measure the object. However, two dimensions create area and three dimensions create volume. Many cases, calculating volume requires only basic multiplication and division, but occasionally demands special formulas.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure width with a ruler. For example, let's suppose the width is 4 inches.

    • 2

Measure the length. In this example, let's suppose the length is 10 inches.

    • 3

Calculate the area of the figure in square units by multiplying the width by the length. In our example, the area of this rectangle is 40 square inches.

    • 4

Measure the height. In this case, let's say the height is 8 inches.

    • 5

Calculate the volume of these dimensions by multiplying them all together. The volume of this cubic rectangle would be 320 cubic inches since 4 x 10 x 8 = 320.
