A rectangle is a four-sided figure with two sets of parallel and congruent lines. Examples of rectangles include bricks, football fields and basketball courts. The area of a rectangle can be measured in square units such as square feet, square inches, square yards or square meters. Since each set of parallel lines is also congruent, you need only measure one set when figuring the length and width.
Instructions

1
Measure the length of the rectangle -- the longer of the sets of sides.
-
2
Measure the width of the rectangle -- the shorter of the sets of sides.
-
-
3
Multiply the length by the width to find the area of the rectangle. For example, if the length equals 9 feet and the width equals 4 feet, the area equals 36 square feet.
