How to Calculate the Area of a Hollow Rectangular Section

When completing some home improvement projects, you may need to calculate the area of a rectangular section, such as if you are laying a new floor or installing tile. Before you can buy the amount of materials you need, you will have to know the total amount of space you're working with. The best way to determine this space is to calculate the area. Because the section has a rectangular shape, the calculation will be easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the longest side of the rectangular section. Because the area is hollow, you shouldn't need to move any furniture or other items.

    • 2

Measure the shorter side of the rectangle.

    • 3

Multiply the two measurements. For example, a space you plan to tile might have a long side of 40 inches and a short side of 22 inches. Multiplied together, you would get an area of 880 square inches. You can now work out how much tile you need to buy.
