How to Calculate the Area of a Shape Automatically

An area of a shape is the measurement of the space contained within the borders of that shape. If you have the measurements of a shape, you can determine the area by using the measurements in a formula targeted for that kind of shape. For example, the formula for the area of a rectangle is width times length. However, if you want to spare yourself the work of calculating the area yourself, you can determine the area automatically by using an online area calculator.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the online shape calculator at mathsisfun.com/area-calculation-tool.html.

    • 2

Click on the shape for which you want to calculate area.

    • 3

Type in the measurements for the shape. The formula beside each shape will tell you which measurements you need. For instance, if you click on a triangle, you will need to enter the base and the height measurements.

    • 4

Click "Calculate Area" to instantly view the answer. For example, if you enter "5" for the triangle's base and "8" for the height, you will see "20" as the area for the triangle.

    • 5

Add the units of measurement to your answer in terms of a square unit. For instance, if the triangle has a base of 5 inches and a height of 8 inches, its area would be 20 square inches or 20 in.^2.
