How to Calculate the Volume of a Small Wooden Cube

Volume is the amount of space enclosed by an object. In more technical terms, it is the amount of unit cubes would fit inside it. A unit cube is a cube measuring 1 cubic meter or centimeter, depending on the measurements you are using. Finding the volume of a solid cube and finding the volume that can be held inside a hollow wooden cube differs in that you must first subtract the thickness of the cube's sides to find its inner volume.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length of the cube's sides. Because all sides are equal on a cube, you only need to measure or find the value of one.

    • 2

Find the length of the inside walls, if you are trying to determine the volume contained within a hollow cube. For example, if you have a cube with sides 10 cm and walls 2 cm thick, the inside will be a cube with sides 6 cm in length.

    • 3

Take the cube of the value by multiplying it by itself three times. In our example, if you are finding the volume of a 10 cm cube, the volume V = 10 cm * 10 cm * 10 cm = 1000 cubic-cm. For the hollow cube, you cube the value for the inside walls. In our example, V = 6 cm * 6 cm * 6 cm = 216 cubic-cm.
