How to Calculate the Area & Perimeter of the Courtyard of Santa Inés

Mission Santa Inés is an old Catholic mission in Solvang, California. The mission was founded in 1804 by Father Estevan Tápis and named in honor of Saint Agnes, the special patroness of chastity and bodily purity. The mission boasts a beautiful courtyard with walkways passing between hedged garden beds and leading to a circular fountain in the center. To calculate the courtyard's area and perimeter, you need to start by finding the lengths of the courtyard's sides.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the sides of the courtyard depicted on the map using your ruler. The courtyard is toward the north end of the Mission Santa Ines complex, surrounded on three sides by buildings and open on the northwestern side.

    • 2

Calculate the real-world lengths of the sides of the courtyard using the map's scale. Multiply the length you measured in inches by the distance represented by an inch on the map. For instance, if one inch on the map represents 100 feet in real life, multiply the number of inches you measured by 100 feet.

    • 3

Calculate the perimeter of the courtyard by adding the lengths of all four sides.

    • 4

Calculate the area of the courtyard by multiplying the length of one side that is oriented east to west with the length of the side that is oriented north to south.
