Many kindergarten teachers use holidays as opportunities to decorate the classroom with lighthearted hangings, holiday-themed student art and class-created projects. Holiday decor projects keep students on the educational task instead of focusing on the upcoming vacation days. Go that extra step by bringing in a holiday tree, hanging a fall wreath or leaning a beach umbrella in the corner to create an added design element to the room.
Set up an area in the classroom adorned with daily-use items such as a calendar for teaching children about months, days of the week and counting numbers to 31. Another daily-use display option includes observing and announcing the day's weather through the student posting of a sun, rain cloud or a snowflake on the weather calendar. Use these items every morning to keep kindergarten students engaged in learning while providing a decorative look to the classroom.
Kindergarten students take pride in daily duties asked of them by the kindergarten teacher. Display a job chart designating at least 10 responsibilities for the children and a number of die-cut shapes with each student's name written on it. Use thematic units, holidays and seasonal characteristics when making the name shapes to keep the decor festive. When changing weekly jobs, remove the name shape from the outer portion of the job chart and place it next to the duty that the specific child is responsible for. Exchange the student names once per week to give each student a turn in each job.
Students will feel accomplishment and pride when their projects are displayed on the class bulletin board. Decorate the bulletin board with a festive border correlating with the season, thematic unit or subject area, and staple or pin excellent student work or artistic masterpieces for all to admire. Student-work decorative areas are a special way to draw attention to each child during open houses and parent-teacher conferences.
