Sort your books into categories such as fiction, nonfiction and favorite series. You need at least one bin for each category and will need more bins for the categories containing more books.
Affix an adhesive label on each of the bins. Use the marker and write the book category on the labels.
Assign a color dot code for each of the categories. If you run out of colors, add a star sticker to the middle of a dot. For instance, picture books might get a red dot with a gold star in the middle.
Place a strip of clear book tape over the sticker-coded labels on the bins. The clear tape provides a layer of protection against little fingers who may peel off the stickers.
Place the corresponding colored dot stickers on the books that belong in each category. For instance, if the Dr. Seuss bin has a green sticker, place a green sticker on all the Dr. Seuss books.
Place a strip of clear book tape over all the stickers you placed on your books. This keeps the stickers in place.
Place the books in their corresponding containers. The color codes will help students return books to their proper locations.
Write each child's name on an adhesive label and an index card.
Assign a label to each of the pockets on the pocket chart.
Place the labeled index cards in their corresponding pockets.
Use each child's index card to record checked-out books. Write the title and check-out date on the card.
