How to Create a Reading Loft in Kindergarten

Promoting a desire to read should begin at a young age. The sooner children learn that reading is both informational and entertaining, the more apt they are to develop a love of reading. At the kindergarten level, in addition to providing activities that encourage the development of reading skills, teachers should also begin to instill a lifetime love of reading. An ideal way to do so is to provide ample opportunities for reading within the classroom. Create a reading loft, or a comfortable space, in your classroom that invites children to engage with books in an enjoyable manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Dedicate a section of the classroom for the reading loft. Choose a quiet space in the classroom, away from noises and distractions.

    • 2

Delineate the space with bookshelves. Arrange three bookshelves in the form of three walls of a square, leaving the fourth wall of the square open to allow access to the space.

    • 3

Stock the shelves with various types of texts; picture books, comic books, class books and informational books, for example. Arrange the books on the shelves according to levels -- lower level reading books on the top shelves and higher level books on the bottom shelves, for example. Place colored stickers on the shelves to differentiate the books levels; green stickers on higher level book shelves and yellow stickers on lower level book shelves, for example.

    • 4

Hang posters on the walls that encourage reading. Choose posters that feature characters from books reading, as well as class or teacher-created reading posters.

    • 5

Arrange comfortable seating on the floor of the area. Large pillows, couch cushions, beanbag chairs and other types of soft chairs are options to consider.
