How to Improve Fluency Reading Skills in Kindergarten

Reading fluency is the ability to recognize words, to read aloud without stumbling over words and to focus on comprehending the story as a whole. Teachers and parents can help a child with reading fluency by being positive role models and practicing exercises at home and in school. Since many children are just beginning to learn to read at this stage of their education, it is important for both teachers and parents to play an active role in helping children learn to read fluently.

Instructions

    • 1

Role model how to read fluently. Read books with the children and point to the words as you read them so they can hear and see the words. Have them listen to books on tape or record your voice reading books they can follow along.

    • 2

Have the children read along with you using echo reading. Echo reading involves a parent or teacher reading a sentence, paragraph or page aloud and then having the children reread the passage chorally. Help the child form the words to assist him in developing fluency skills and offer feedback to improve reading skills.

    • 3

Let an older child help the kindergarten child by listening to her read and providing feedback, helping her say difficult words or improving her flow by stopping at the right places. An older sibling or student can also read the passage first so the child can hear how it is supposed to sound.

Allow your child to choose his own books at home and practice reading with you every night. Rhyming books or poems help children quickly learn fluency skills. These books have an ebb and flow to them that encourages children to read at an appropriate pace, according to Reading Resource. Allow your child time to read the book aloud to himself as well as reading to you or another adult who can critique his performance.

Talk with your child's teacher about any other ways you can assist your child in learning to read more fluently. Ask the teacher for any books that might be helpful in improving her reading fluency. Show your child flashcards of difficult words to help her with recognition. Being an active part of your child's education will lead to more academic success.
