To create a mock football game out of paper, you can craft a mock football field -- complete with goal posts -- by using a cardboard box. Trim the box to a height of 6 inches and craft goal posts out of pipe cleaners or paper towel tubes. Color the bottom green to represent grass, and draw yard markings on the field. Have the kindergarteners create the teams by making paper dolls dressed as football players. Allow kids to craft helmets out of cardboard, and tape them to the heads of the paper dolls. Place the dolls on the pretend field and let kids take turns playing pretend football.
Kindergarten classrooms in a state with a professional, semi-professional or college football team can pay homage to the team by working in groups to make banners celebrating the team. Show the students pictures of the team, team uniforms and other items showcasing the mascot and team colors. Have kids work in groups of two to four and make banners by using poster board cut into a banner shape. Have the kids decorate the banners using poster paint and hang the banners in the classroom.
Watching a video of a football game, whether it's a local high school game or professional game, can be one way to incorporate football into the classroom. To make the event more engaging, have football-shaped sugar cookies made for game viewing. Use chocolate or molasses cookies shapes liked footballs, and use black icing to draw the strings on the balls. Kids can take part in decorating the cookies to get them even more involved. If you have a larger class, opt for a football-shaped cake.
Getting kindergarteners involved in football can be accomplished by dividing the class into two teams. Draw names to avoid pitting boys against girls, or friends against others. Flag football is a non-contact version of the game, which can be played for fun and exercise. This is also a good way to introduce the sport to children that are not yet familiar with the sport. You can even include kids who are unable to participate by having them act as cheerleaders for both sides.
