Kindergarten Classroom Resources

Gaily decorated bulletin boards, child-sized desks and nooks and crannies full of colorful educational materials transform an ordinary classroom into a world of wonder for students who are just beginning their formal schooling. The savvy kindergarten teacher uses a variety of tools and resources to make learning exciting for kids in the class.
  1. Three-dimensional Resources

    • Kindergarteners relate to well to hands-on activities. Supply manipulatives, such as colored blocks to help develop counting, addition and subtraction skills as well as color and shape identification or play money that helps students learn about currency. Clocks with movable hands are another resource that children can manipulate to show specific times of the day. Puzzles with interlocking shapes help children build spatial relationship skills.

    Visual Resources

    • Common visual resources for kindergarten include flashcards of alphabet letters, shapes, colors, numbers and simple addition and subtraction. Most kindergarten classrooms also have the alphabet letters posted in both upper and lowercase; pupils easily can refer to these visuals if they are confused while writing. Educational videos on topics such as nature, history, grammar and social skills aid learning periodically, while textbooks are used daily.

    Audio Resources

    • Kindergarten students frequently enjoy participating in audio activities. Spelling bees that consist of simple words are one way that children participate in learning audibly. Songs are another. Many teachers use audio recordings of simple songs with learning principles expressed in them or play a musical instrument in accompaniment while the students sing. Phonics are another audible activity that reinforce reading skills by teaching children to sound out words by focusing on the audible sound of each alphabet letter.

    Arts and Crafts Resources

    • Students can use finger paint to create projects linked to their lessons.

Kindergarten instructors often break up the day for their students with art projects that reinforce lessons covered that day. Art also presents the opportunity for children to express themselves creatively through the use of a variety of media. Children can make projects with finger paint and clay or color in worksheets with crayons. Other crafts items for a well-stocked kindergarten classroom include glue, paper plates, dry pasta and craft sticks.
