Made-at-Home Math Games for Kindergarten

Making math games at home can make learning fun as well as introduce or reinforce math concepts that your kindergartener is learning. You can use a variety of materials that you already have around the house. Be sure to include your child when making them game; he will be more likely to want to play if he helped create the game.
  1. Introducing Numbers

    • Get an empty tissue box and paint each side a different color. When the paint is dry, write a different number on each side of the box in large, black lettering. Roll the box like dice and have your child read the number that comes up. This can be done with more than one box so the numbers are higher as your child learns. Or write simple addition problems and ask your child to solve the one that comes up.

    Addition and Subtraction

    • Get a jar and write simple addition and subtraction equations on popsicle sticks. Place them in the jar and have your child pick one out and then try to answer the equation. Or for a fun fishing game, create a fishing rod using a piece of wood with a string tied to it and a magnet tied to the end. Cut out fish and write the equations on each fish, then put a paper clip on each one. Your child can then go "fishing" for an equation and figure out the answer.

    Fractions

    • Give your child three round pieces of food, such as a mini pizza, a cookie and a slice of orange. Ask your child what she would do to divide the items into halves, thirds and quarters. Help her cut the foods up into those portions and talk about which is larger, which is smaller and what numbers are in each fraction. She will get a visible representation of what these fractions look like.

    Money

    • Play restaurant with your child using play or imaginary food. If he is just starting to learn about money, use 10 pennies and a couple of nickels. Explain what the money is worth first by placing five pennies by each nickel and helping him figure out different ways to make 10 cents. Then take turns buying and selling food, giving the correct change.
