Sit in a circle on the rug with the students and discuss the numbers and hands on the puzzle clock. Move the hands to to different times and discuss what each time is and what you doing at that time. For example, 12 p.m. is time for lunch. Then take the clock puzzle apart and slowly place each piece where it belongs after first trying pieces out in different places on the clock. Show your students that the numbers only fit where they belong. Take the puzzle apart a few more times and invite students to put the pieces where they belong. Then place the interactive, age appropriate clock puzzles into your math corner to give your kindergartners the opportunity to use it for independent learning.
Take photos of your daily class activities and use a classroom chart to make a class schedule using the photos, simple captions and interchangeable time cards. For example, take a photo of the children participating in the flag salute, use the caption "Time for the flag salute" and write "8:30 a.m." Use a different color marker to write the words in each line on the schedule. Begin each day by taking the time cards out and reviewing the daily activities. First take the time cards off the schedule chart. Next point to each photo and read the caption for the photo, then place the correct time card onto the chart. Point to and say the time and have the students repeat the time.
Use the word processing program on your computer to make a table that looks like a Bingo grid with nine squares -- three across and three down. Use the computer keyboard, a marker or stamps to place the digital or analog clock time in each square in the "Time Bingo" grid. Make four Bingo grids with different analog and digital times in each grid, print out 11 copies of each grid sheet and laminate them all. Cut the squares out of one of each of the grids sheets and put them in a small decorated coffee can. Alternately mix the rest of the grid sheets together so that when your students play Time Bingo, each student gets a different card. Play "Time Bingo" with the whole group a few times then place the game into the Math Corner.
Time Bingo is a five person activity. During the game one person chooses the numbers from the coffee can. The other four students have a Time Bingo grid sheet and nine chips that they use to cover the times when they are called. When one person in the group wins the rest of the students continue to play until each person has a "Bingo."
To make your "Analog and Digital Clock Match" cards cut out 10 3-by-9-inch cardboard rectangles. Make 10 different cards and cover them with contact paper. On the left side of each card make the time on an analog clock, and on the right side, make the same time on a digital clock. Cut each card in half using a different cut, like an "S" cut, "Z" cut or another unique cut. Make sure that no two cards are cut alike because the students use the cuts to match the analog and digital times for each card set.
