Fun Math Games for 5-Year-Olds

Five-year-olds are ready to learn basic math skills, such as counting, sorting and identifying numbers. To enhance your child's capabilities, design some math games that will help him learn about math while allowing him to have fun at the same time. An enjoyable experience will help your child retain the information and want to continue learning.
  1. Ball Count

    • If your five-year-old enjoys playing with bouncy balls, use one as your prop for a math game. Stand across from your child with the ball and bounce it in front of you once as you count, "1." Then toss the ball to your child and she must bounce the ball in front of herself twice, counting "1, 2." Then it is your turn to bounce the ball three times and then back to your child for a four-time bounce. The game continues back and forth like this until you go as far as what your child knows.

    Number Blocks

    • Number blocks can be used for teaching young kids a variety of math functions, such as adding and multiplying. For five-year-olds it is age-appropriate to use number blocks as a means for teaching them how to sort and group together numbers. You will need a lot of blocks for this game. Put all of the blocks into one large pile and instruct your child to sort through them so that all of the number "1" blocks are together, the number "2" blocks together, etc. Then ask your child to count how many number "1" blocks he has and work your way through all of the numbers on the blocks.

    File Folder Math Games

    • A file folder can serve as a game board or card for math games. Take a regular office file folder and flatten it out so that both flaps are open. You can then draw or paste images on the file folder for your math game. If you are creating a counting game, put star stickers on the file folder and have your child count them. Another file folder game idea is to create a column of numbers, 1 through 5, on one of the folder flaps then on the other flap paste star stickers in groups of one through five. The object of the game is for your child to draw a line between the number that matches the star group. For instance, the number "1" should have a line drawn to a single star.

    Math War

    • Math war is a card game that requires your five-year-old to determine which card is the highest card through number recognition. Sit with your child and cut the deck of cards in half between the two of you. On the count of three, each of you flip over the top card of your deck. It is up to your child to tell you which card is higher. If her card is the higher one, then she collects all the cards on the table. If your card is higher, you collect the cards. The person with the most cards at the end of the game wins.
