Math Games to Make for Kindergarten

Introducing math to children in a fun and interactive way will help give them a firm foundation that will follow them the rest of their lives. Through fun games that reinforce math concepts, children will gain a love for math and a confidence in their own ability to solve mathematical problems that will extend well past their kindergarten years.
  1. Math Bingo

    • Make bingo cards with numbers written on them. Each student gets a bingo card and some pennies to use as bingo markers. The teacher calls out simple addition problems, such as "1+1= ," and waits for children to do the addition. Students may need help to obtain the answers. If the answer is on their bingo card, they put a coin on that square. The first student to get a straight line across, vertically or diagonally wins.

    Geometry Hunt

    • Divide students into teams. Ask students to go on a geometry hunt through the classroom. Ask them to find examples of a circle, square, and other shapes. Students must draw a picture of the item they select to represent each shape. The first team to find and draw a picture of something in the room that represents each shape wins the game.

    Number Finds

    • Ask students to cut pictures out of catalogs and magazines that represent the numbers one through nine. For instance, a student may cut out one person to represent the number 1 and a picture with 10 balloons in it to represent the number 10. Declare the first person to finish a winner, but also give praise to those who do a creative or better than average job.

    Math Baseball

    • Get a large beach ball and write the numbers one through nine all over it with a permanent marker. Toss the ball from student to student. Whichever two numbers the student's thumbs land on are the two numbers she must add together before tossing the ball to another student.
