Playing restaurant is a great way to bring math into life at home and make things more fun. Create a menu with different prices for different food items before cooking dinner. Let the kids decide what they would like to order and make their dinner accordingly. At the end of the meal, have them total up their bill and what they would owe. If you would like to make this more advanced, you could have them calculate a tip as well.
Choose a number that you will call the "number of the day." Ask your children to make up different ways to make the number of the day using equations. Have your children talk about their different equations and ways to get to the "number of the day." This will practice their math skills as well as the different ways they can get to a number using various mathematical methods.
A great way to make learning fractions fun is to show them using food. In school, many students learn fractions based on a whole pie, or a whole pizza for example, but they don't have the actual food in front of them. Have a pizza for dinner, and explain it in terms of fractions during dinner. Slice a pie for dessert and explain it in terms of fractions as well. The reward for the correct answer can be the slice.
We have all played this game, but it's a great way to practice math skills. Let your child pick a number between 1 and 100 and try to guess their number by asking questions. For example, you can ask if it is more or less than 50. This requires greater than/less than skills. You may also ask if it's even or odd. If you wanted to make the game more advanced, you could ask if it's a multiple of a certain number.
