Interactive Math Games for Kids

Teachers and researchers, as well as parents, know that most students prefer academic involvements that combine work and play. Educational scholar John Dewey claimed that "experience is the most rewarding when it involves the seemingly contradictory traits of rigor and playfulness," and indeed, students benefit from instruction that links such interests as art, hobbies and sports to mathematics.
  1. Numbers and Operations

    • Many interactive games teach the concepts of number theory and number operations. One such game involves the Pascal triangle. The students are told to color numbers in Pascal's triangle by rolling a number and then clicking on all entries that are multiples of the number rolled, thereby practicing multiplication tables, investigating number patterns and investigating fractal patterns.
Another aspect of number theory involves practicing estimation skills, which can be accomplished through several online games. The "More or Less" estimator allows students to practice estimation skills by determining whether the number of objects, the length of a line or the area of a shape is more or less than the number given.
The "Equivalent Fractions Pointer" is a game that lets students practice estimation skills by determining the number of objects, the length of a line, or the area of a shape.

    Probability and Statistics

    • Games that let students practice the concepts of probability are often simulations. For example, the "Simulation Coin Toss" lets students practice the probability of a typical coin toss, while "Buffon's Needle" allows them to experiment with a simulation to get an approximation of pi by dropping a needle on a lined sheet of paper. The "Crazy Choices" game allows players to compare the theoretical and experimental probabilities, using dice, cards, spinners, or coin tosses.

    Online Activities

    • Numerous interactive activities and games can be performed on the computer. The University of Waterloo has set up a website that lists games that can enhance understanding is subjects such as fractions, prime numbers, decimals, ratios, geometry, square roots, algebra and many others. Each game on that site is fun and challenging, and can provide a diverse enhancement to instruction and practice. Also, the MathMovesU website has a fun flash games for the sixth- to eighth-grade level that allows students to practice various mathematical concepts while navigating an imaginary interactive world.
