Interactive Math Games for Grade Two

According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the national standards for grades PreK-2 for number and operations include using a variety of methods to solve mathematics problems. Traditional classroom lessons stress mental computation, estimation, number rule strategies and pencil and paper methods. Free online math games help students solve addition, subtraction and calendar problems while preventing them from completely relying on technology to solve simple, everyday math problems.
  1. Addition Game

    • A bee guides students through addition problems. The pointer icon is replaced with a pencil graphic, which allows students to write on the problem screen. Students can use techniques for carrying numbers during addition. Using the pencil is not required in case a student wishes to practice mental computation.

Answer choices are provided in a multiple-choice format. Questions answered correctly are followed by a snappy sound effect. Incorrect answers prompt students to try again. No feedback or hints are provided. Students keep choosing answers until the correct answer is chosen. Therefore, this game is geared toward individual practice as opposed to a competitive activity. With the touch of a button, students can transform the game into subtraction problems.

    Subtraction Game

    • This interactive, animated fishing game practices subtraction, patience and hand-eye coordination. Students are given a subtraction problem. They use their fishing pole to hook the swimming fish that is labeled with the correct answer. For example, for the subtraction problem 5-2, students must click on the fish with a 3 on it.

If students provide an incorrect answer, then the game prompts them to try again. This competitive game has a scoreboard and tracks the game time. Students can play this game alone but compare their scores with one another. An addition version of this fishing game is available.

    Calendar Game

    • Second-grade students need to master calendar concepts by the end of the school year. This free online game provides students with a calendar and asks them to identify specific dates. This game is perfect for a quick supplemental activity to class lessons and workbook practice. There are five questions in each level. Students have three chances to answer each question.

There are three difficulty levels. For example, in the easiest level students identify the second Monday in January, given the January calendar. In the hardest level, students identify a date two weeks from a given date. Mastering the concept of time helps students succeed in other areas of study by improving time management.
