Begin with the LeapStart level, then move through levels one through three. Have your child take the LeapPad pen and touch "Say It" or the word bubble icon to hear the page or a specific word read out loud.
Encourage your child to repeat the word he hears, then touch the pen to the word again to hear the word repeated. Repeat as many times as necessary.
Touch the "Sound It" button, then drag the pen across the word to hear it sounded out. Sound the word out as well with your child, then have him drag the pen across the word again. Ask him if he can identify the letters in the word by name.
Touch the "Spell It" button and touch a word to hear it spelled out loud. Spell the word aloud with your child, then ask him if he can sound it out. Move back to "Sound It," repeating Step 3. Allow your child to move freely between words and the "Sound It" and "Spell It" buttons, encouraging him to repeat what he hears each time.
Give your child the notebook and a pencil and choose a word from your LeapPad story you've been spelling and sounding out. Ask him to identify the letters in the word, then tap "Spell It" to hear the word spelled. Have your child write each letter on the paper, then sound out the word himself.
Continue through the series, alternating between spelling and sounding and writing. As he progresses, your child can begin writing complete sentences from the story or mixing the words up to create new sentences in his notebook.
