Math Games for 13-Year-Olds

As the field of game-based learning matures, researchers and designers continue to design games targeted across all levels of education. Since the development of math skills requires students to practice through repetition, researchers point to video games as a compelling alternative. By their nature, video games are excellent at presenting students with a series of increasingly difficult problems. Also, in-game rewards help keep students motivated. Some studies show that games do a better job of teaching math than traditional education. Games targeted toward 13-year-olds focus on pre-algebra.
  1. Math Blaster: Pre-Algebra

    • Math Blaster: Pre-Albegra is one of a series of math education games published by Knowledge Adventure School. The game focuses on developing pre-algebra skills, including positive and negative integers, the order of operations, ratios, proportions and percents. The game engages students across several mini-games, including word problems, matching games and graphing, as well as three difficulty levels.

    Math Playground

    • Math Playground is a website devoted to educational Flash games. Although it includes games across all subjects, it hosts several math games that are particularly suited for seventh-graders. Examples include games that improve students' skills in fractions, decimals and percentages, as well as puzzle games that rely on solving equations.

    Top Marks

    • Top Marks is a website that specializes in educational Flash games. Because these games are browser-based, they are quick and easy to pick up. Top Marks hosts several games, each focusing on a single math concept. Examples include finding prime factors and exploring the order of operations.

    Ko's Journey

    • Ko's Journey blends a compelling narrative with middle school math standards, motivating students through its dialogue, art and characters. The game follows Ko, a young girl who must reunite with her kin beyond the mountain. To traverse the wilderness, students must help Ko solve several types of math problems, including ratios, percentages and Cartesian planes. The game is browser based and includes tools for parents and teachers to chart students' progress.
