Cooking is one way to help kids begin to learn about dividing fractions. Use pizza as an easy way to show them about wholes and fractions of the whole. They can take the whole pizza and divide it up while learning how to divide fractions. Cut the pizza into four pieces, and show the kids that you are starting with 4/4. Take away one to show they now have 3/4. Cut the pizza into eight slices, and ask how many slices four students will get. Divide only the top numbers of eight and four to receive an answer of two. Each student will receive two pieces.
Worksheets are another activity that can help students learn about dividing fractions because it helps them visualize the fractions. Flipping is an important concept when dividing fractions. When a student has two fractions on his paper, he must remember to flip the second fraction before doing the math. Once the students flip the second fraction, then they can multiply to arrive at an answer. For example, one problem is 3/4 divided by 2/3. The student will flip the second fraction, now making the problem 3/4 times 3/2. Multiply the top numbers together and the bottom numbers together to get an answer of 9/8.
The ability to divide fractions in their heads is an important part of students' learning how to do fractions. When kids can divide fractions in their heads, they can do problems much quicker than writing them out. Give students oral problems and ask them to figure out the answers mentally. Use problems that are a little more challenging to broaden their learning. Have them visualize a chalkboard in their heads where they can write out the problem mentally.
If your school has computers available to the students, or your child needs extra help at home, allow her to use the computer to play fraction dividing games. Many sites offer games free of charge for your kids to play. These games offer different problems each time that your child can learn the process of dividing fractions and not just memorizing the particular problems on the site. Use a variety of sites and games to mix up the routine.
