Activities on Getting Ready for Kindergarten

Starting kindergarten is one of the major milestones in a child's life. For many children, it marks the first time they are away from their parents for an extended amount of time. Naturally, this transition may be met with anxiousness, but there are plenty of activities to engage the child to help alleviate his fears. Talk openly and excitedly about kindergarten, remembering that your child takes many emotional cues from you.
  1. School Tour

    • Give her a tour of the school.

The idea of going to kindergarten may seem quite daunting to a preschooler. Make sure you accompany her on a tour of the school she will be attending. Close to the beginning of the school year, walk around and show her the classrooms, if possible. Maybe she can even meet her teacher. Drive or walk by the school many times during the summer break and it will help her become accustomed to it.

    Picnic Play Group

    • New friends can be made before school even starts.

The new school may host a pre-kindergarten picnic for the new students. The picnic play group will allow the new students to get acquainted with each other prior to the beginning of school. Connections will be made between children and parents alike, easing the transition into kindergarten. Class play groups can be arranged between parents if the school does not do it. You can also host a small group of children for a backyard play group.

    School Stories

    • Read books about going to kindergarten and allow her to ask questions.

Take your child on a trip to the local library to find books about going to kindergarten. During the summer months, there may even be special kindergarten-based displays prepared by the librarian. Look especially for books which deal with characters who may feel a little anxious about kindergarten. Any chosen books should have a positive ending which celebrates the fun of going to kindergarten. Read the books with your child often and give him plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

    Stock Up

    • Pick a backpack that is just the right size.

Some schools will request that each kindergartner have a list of items she will need. This could include anything from a backpack to a special blanket for nap time. Take your child and allow her to select some of the required items in anticipation of starting kindergarten. This will give her a sense of familiarity and confidence in going to school. If she is required to wear a uniform, make a special trip out of going to pick it out.
