How to Sort Colors in a Kindergarten

When children enter kindergarten, they often know some of their basic colors, but not every shade of a particular color. This is why sorting items by color can be a crucial in helping children learn colors, shades and hues. One of the first ways that children learn colors in kindergarten is by learning about the rainbow.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach the children the colors of the rainbow in order: Red, Orange, Yellow. Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. Then find all the items that you would like to keep together of one color. Starting with red is easiest because it's the first color of the rainbow.

    • 2

Place the items in a basket or other container and place at an appropriate level. Place all shades of the same color in the same container. This will help to create less confusion later on. If you are sorting items for the kids to use, place them within eye level so that they can see them and also be able to reach them.

    • 3

Label the container using the color of the items inside. Labeling with the name of the color that is inside the box can help kindergartners read basic words such as blue, green, yellow and red because they are able to build an association with the item, color and word.

    • 4

Continue sorting items and placing them in containers. Using the colors of the rainbow will make it easier for kindergartners to remember which order things go in.
