How to Make a Connect the Dots Picture

Connect-the-dots puzzles involve drawing a line through a series of numbered dots until an outline of an object is created. This type of puzzle can help develop the visual motor skills and hand coordination of young children. You can purchase connect-the-dots drawings or coloring books at toy stores; however, they can be quite expensive and are not reusable. You can make your own personalized connect-the-dots pictures using a few items you can purchase at an arts and crafts store.

Instructions

    • 1

Resize the image of the picture you want, using your favorite image editing software, to a standard paper size of 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Print out the image using black and white settings.

    • 2

Place a piece of tracing paper on top of the printed black and white image. Use small paper clips on all of the corners to hold the papers together.

    • 3

Draw dots around the outline of the image using a fine-tip black marker. Start anywhere in the outline and draw several dots that are about 3/4 inch or 1/2 inch spread apart. Avoid creating dots that are too close together because you will need to number them later.

    • 4

Number all the dots you created. Start on any dot in the outline and write the number "1" using a pencil. Keep numbering the dots in sequence until you reach the end. Use an eraser to correct any mistakes.

    • 5

Remove the paper clips and scan the tracing paper using a scanner. Print out the image on standard 8.5-inch-by-11-inch printing paper. Make as many copies as you want. If you don't have a scanner at home, take the tracing paper to a copy center and have it photocopied.
