Preparatory Schools in England

In the United Kingdom, preparatory schools have a slightly different function than do their counterparts in the United States. Instead of focusing on preparation for admission to a college or university, most English prep schools, which are geared toward younger children, focus on preparing students for secondary school (aka high school). Fortunately, there are many quality prep schools in the United Kingdom for parents to choose from. Below is a list of several top schools as ranked by the respected Independent Schools Directory web site.
  1. Oakwood Preparatory School

    • The Oakwood Preparatory School was originally founded in 1912 and currently enrolls fewer than 300 children per year, ages 2 to 11. The beautiful, large Georgian country house that students attend each day is set on 160 acres of lush woodland between the coast and the South Downs.

The school works to establish a strong sense of community among the students and highly encourages personal achievement. The curriculum is structured but flexible, focusing on six key areas: personal, social and emotional development; communication, language and literacy; problem-solving, reasoning and numeracy; knowledge and understanding of the world; physical development; and creative development.

All classrooms are spacious and well-equipped, and the property also includes a library, gymnasium, dining room, science lab, art and design technology studio, music and theater complex, heated indoor swimming pool, tennis courts, and more than nine acres of athletic fields.

    The Red Maids' School

    • The Red Maids' School is specifically for young ladies and is the oldest surviving all-girls school in the country, first founded in 1634. The mission of the school is to provide girls from many cultures and backgrounds with the skills, confidence and independence necessary to become successful in the ever-changing world of the 21st century.

The junior school is open to girls ages 7 to 11, after which they move to the senior school at age 12. The senior school offers a challenging curriculum that includes the study of foreign languages, classical civilizations, art, music, drama, business, sciences and technology.

The well-manicured, 12-acre property features large classrooms, a modern library and six newly refurbished science labs, as well as top-notch athletic facilities for field hockey, tennis, basketball, track, fencing, judo, dance and gymnastics. In addition, the school is open to students with special needs, such as learning or medical disabilities.
