How to Enter Public School After Private Kindergarten

In addition to being expensive, private schools tend to be academically demanding, may not accommodate special-needs children, are often elitist and lacking in diversity, and may depend on parents to provide transportation and food for the child. Regardless of your reason, if private school isn't in your child's best interests, it is relatively easy to switch to public school.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your child about the decision to switch from private to public school. Accentuate the positive: Tell her she will get to see more of her neighborhood friends at public school. Listen to her concerns. Give her a chance to say goodbye to her private-school teachers and trade contact information with private-school friends. Consider taking her on a tour of the public school so she can see what they have to offer.

    • 2

Notify the private school and inform them of your decision. If you are switching mid-year, you might be responsible for that year's tuition. If switching after the end of the year, you aren't obligated to notify the school. It is polite to inform them, however, since the school can then offer your child's spot to another qualified student.

Call your local school district to inquire about exact enrollment procedures, which vary from district to district. Ask about the specific documentation required to enroll.

    • 4

Go to the appropriate office and fill out an application for enrollment. You will need to supply documentation, including the child's passport or birth certificate to establish proof of age and residency, proof of physical examination, test results and required immunizations. The public school is responsible for contacting the private school to obtain past records.
