How Do I Get My Child to Stop Rushing in School?

If your child rushes through her schoolwork, it can lead to careless errors that can negatively affect her grades. Students rush through school for a variety of reasons--overconfidence or lack of confidence, wanting to do something else, and thinking that being finished first is best. While you can't always control what she's doing in school, you can help her to develop the skills that she needs to slow down in class.

Instructions

Talk to the teacher to help you understand why your child rushes. Your child's teacher may be able to give you insight into the problem. This can help you address it correctly at home. It also allows you to work with the teacher to rectify the situation.

    • 2

Review your child's homework every night. Ask him to review it with him. Kiasu Parents, a web site that offers research and advice on raising children, suggests that in many cases the problem is that students simply do not know how to review work before turning it in. Doing this with your child will force him to take things slowly and discover minor mistakes that he may have made.

    • 3

Establish a reward system for good work. Look over your child's schoolwork, including tests and in-class worksheets, and note whether the child made careless mistakes. If there are few mistakes, give a reward. For example, you can create a sticker chart that allows her to earn stickers for good work. Once she has a certain number of stickers, you'll buy her something that she wants or let her have a certain privilege. Dr. Sam Goldstein, a child psychologist, suggests withholding privileges until you child meets her study goals. This can help her to be more careful in school.

    • 4

Praise your child for a job well done. Giving praise can go over just as well as physical rewards. Tell your child how proud you are of him when he does well on his schoolwork.

    • 5

Time homework assignments. Don't allow your child to rush through her homework. Set aside a certain amount of time nightly for homework. She can have privileges such as watching TV or playing video games after the homework time is up, rather than after she is finished. This will encourage her to take longer on her work, paying more attention to the details.
