Pearl Harbor Kai elementary school opened in 1943. It is located in the naval housing area of Hale Moku. Nearly 95 percent of its students have families in the military, or family members that work in some other federal capacity. The annual transiency rate is 35 percent. Students typically stay at the school between one and three years, which creates a diversity not always seen in other schools.
Pearl Harbor elementary, which opened in 1955, is near the Navy Exchange. In 2011, the school served approximately 600 students that represented a wide cultural diversity. The school serves students both from military families and community members, and its two full-time guidance counselors are well-versed in military issues.
Hickam Elementary, established in 1950, is on the Hickam Air Force base near the Honolulu International airport and historic Pearl Harbor. Approximately 650 students living in the Hickam area military housing attended the school in 2011. Students and members of the military often work together for assemblies, charitable toy drives and other events. The school also has an in-house Air Force liaison for students and their families.
Aliamanu Middle School, established in 1958, serves seventh and eighth graders from both military posts and the community. The school features a transition center to help the large number of students from military families who move in during the school year. Students use the center to get acclimated to the school, take class placement tests, and receive follow-up care to ensure they are adjusting well.
Radford High School, which opened in 1957, is named after Admiral Arthur W. Radford, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Most of the students at Radford have family members connected to the military. The 27-acre campus is one mile away from Pearl Harbor.
