Sharon Public Schools in Sharon, Pennsylvania

The city of Sharon, Penn., sits along the state's western border, about 1 mile east of the Ohio-Pennsylvania state line and 80 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Settlers first occupied the area in 1802 -- today, the town boasts a population of nearly 15,000 (as of 2009). The Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV oversees the public school system in Sharon, which consists of three elementary schools and one school for all area students grades seven through 12.
  1. Case Avenue Elementary

    • For more than 85 years, the Case Avenue facility has served Sharon students. As of 2011, about 650 students in kindergarten through sixth grade attend this school. As of this writing, the Sharon City School District plans to dismantle the existing facility and rebuild a smaller space nearby that is more suited to the current demographics. Case Avenue follows the protocol outlined for the district's three elementary schools. The reading program requires students in all grades to read 25 books minimum per year. In addition to teaching language arts, math, science and social studies, Case Avenue students and all Sharon elementary students can also learn art, music and technology.

    C.M. Musser Elementary

    • This school serves approximately 330 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. C.M. Musser students can participate in the school's STOMP drum ensemble, which plays at pep rallies and annual concerts. Children at all three Sharon elementary schools can participate in the district's Children's Opportunities for Outside Learning (COOL) program. This after-school curriculum enables students and their families to participate in additional academic and social skills training. The Sharon school district conducts online technology courses for all elementary students in Sharon. Students in fifth and sixth grade at all three elementary schools can elect to participate in choral ensembles.

    West Hill Elementary

    • West Hill Elementary provides education to approximately 300 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. This school tailors its education to achieving the Pennsylvania state standards, and in 2005, the U.S. Department of Education recognized West Hill Elementary as a "Blue Ribbon School" under the No Child Left Behind program. Students in grades four through six at all three Sharon elementary schools can elect to participate in the annual Spelling Bee competition.

    Sharon Middle-High School

    • All Sharon students matriculate to Sharon Middle-High School after completing sixth grade. The curriculum focuses on college-preparatory and business subjects; students interested in learning a trade or studying technology can take courses at local technical institutes or apprentice with Job Corps or a local union. Sharon Middle-High School's ENCORE program serves academically gifted students with Advanced Placement courses and individualized programming.

This middle-high school offers students a number of extracurricular activities, including National Honor Society, Marching Band, Orchestra, Choir and an annual spring musical. Student athletes can participate in a number of sports at the "AA" level. Some of these sports teams include football, track and field, girls' volleyball, boys' wrestling, baseball, tennis, swimming, soccer, and cross-country.
