How to Remove Art Programs From Schools

When school budgets shrink and cuts need to be made, school art programs tend to be the first on the chopping block. Unlike traditional academic classes, art programs are not seen as necessary for a basic education. However, art programs are among the most popular with students and community members removing an art program from a school often leads to public outcry and bad publicity for the school and the board of education. The biggest challenge for school administrators in removing such art programs is finding a way to save money for the school district while also appeasing supporters of art programs.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a proposed school budget that shows the savings to the school district if the art program is removed from the school. Explain how keeping the art program will affect the property taxes paid by residents.

    • 2

Look for compromises that can keep some art classes in the school that will cost less than the full art program. The frequency that art classes are offered can be reduced. The budget for art supplies can be reduced.

    • 3

Seek alternate sources of funding to keep some art offerings in the school. Grant money may be available to fund some art programs. When local businesses see the negative reaction to art cuts, they may be willing to donate money to sponsor some art programs and gain some positive publicity for their business.

    • 4

Work with community arts organizations or local colleges. Volunteers from local arts organizations or colleges may be able to visit schools to provide art education or enrichment programs that can take the place of an art program removed from the school.
