How to Obtain a Copy of Your Student's Educational Records From a Public School

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that, along with applicable state and local laws and school district policies, governs access to and protects the privacy of student education records. Because FERPA applies to all schools that receive funding under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education, every public elementary and secondary school in the country must comply with it.

This may involve visiting the records office in person, filling out forms or writing a letter to request the records.
