How to Go From Public School to the A Beka Curriculum

The A Beka curriculum features a Christian perspective, including Creationism and Bible references for all subjects. Jennifer Harrison, of A Beka Books, claims that A Beka is typically one to two grade levels ahead of public schools. While the program requires an adjustment period, most students can successfully make the transition from public school to the A Beka curriculum and remain on grade level. No child enjoys going into a third grade workbook when he is in the fifth grade, so careful remediation to get to the current level in the A Beka curriculum is necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Request subject tests from A Beka. Choose subject tests that present material at the assumed grade level of the student. Contact the company through their website or call their customer service department.

    • 2

Administer subject tests to the student. Do not provide study material for these tests, as theses serve to determine what the student actually knows. If the student cannot pass grade-level tests, order new tests a grade level or two below and retest.

    • 3

Grade the tests to determine proper placement within the A Beka curriculum. If the child passes the final test in each subject, test him at the next level. Continue this process until the student reaches a level where he is struggling.

    • 4

Work through any below-grade level curriculum that challenged the student. Allow the student to prove what he knows and quickly skip over it, while going more in-depth in the areas where he struggles.

    • 5

Continue to work through the curriculum in this way until the student has caught up with her peers. Once the student is at level, allow her to work at the same pace as the rest of the class.
