How to Homeschool Your Children in Kentucky for Religious Reasons

Some parents prefer to homeschool their children for religious reasons. These parents may not want their children exposed to certain mainstream educational ideas, like evolution, and may want their child's daily education to include readings from the Bible and other religious topics. In Kentucky, parents do not need any special training or a college degree in order to homeschool their children. Any parent can choose to homeschool his child for any reason, including religious reasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin homeschooling your child no later than his sixth birthday.

    • 2

Send a letter to the local school board notifying the board of your intent to homeschool your child no later than 14 days after the start of the school year. You do not need to state the reason you will homeschool in your letter, though you can if you want to provide an explanation.

    • 3

Keep attendance records for your child. Your child must attend homeschool at least 175 days per year, with each instructional day including six hours of instruction.

    • 4

Develop or purchase a curriculum that includes reading, writing, spelling, grammar, math, history and civics. Include other topics if you like, such as science, geography and religion. Select any textbooks you feel are appropriate for your child. Take advantage of his interests. For instance, if he likes to bake, make cookies and practice fractions with the measurements. If he likes horses, find books about horses and have him write stories about horses to practice his reading and writing skills.

    • 5

Develop a regular schedule for schoolwork. Stick to the schedule as much as possible but make changes based on your child's needs.

    • 6

Consider getting together with other families that homeschool to allow your child to socialize with his peers. In some areas, organizations like the YMCA offer art classes or physical education classes for homeschoolers. Plan field trips with other homeschooling families.
