How to Start Homeschooling Your Child

More and more parents in the United States are deciding to educate their children in their homes rather than send them to public or private schools. Once the decision to homeschool has been made, the prospect of beginning the process can be overwhelming. With a little preparation and research before you are ready to begin, the process does not have to be that difficult. There are certain requirements that you will have to meet prior to beginning the education of your child, so begin getting ready to homeschool early.

Instructions

  1. Meet Your State Requirements

    • 1

Check with the Home School Legal Defense Association for the laws of your state concerning homeschooling. It is legal to homeschool in all 50 states, but each has a different set of requirements.

    • 2

Complete your letter of intent to homeschool to the school board or state, if required. Most states require some type of notification to the educational system before you begin homeschooling your child.

    • 3

Complete any other steps required by the educational board of your state. These steps may include providing a copy of your curriculum or proving that you have a certain amount of education.

    Choose a Style and Curriculum

    • 4

Decide which style of homeschooling you will use. Classical homeschooling methods have set curriculum topics, while unschooling or unit study focuses more on what the child wants to learn about and does not have a set curriculum.

    • 5

Choose a curriculum that fits the style you have chosen for classical homeschooling. Choose the first topic you will begin teaching when school begins for unit or unschooling methods.

    • 6

Set up a schedule. Plan the schedule so that it fits in with your life, such as around nap time or other duties.

    Join a Home School Group

    • 7

Research the Home School Legal Defense Association's website for homeschool groups in your area.

    • 8

Contact them and find out more about what activities they involve the members of the group in. You may also want to find out what their beliefs are, if that is one of your reasons for homeschooling.

    • 9

Join the group that most fits you and your children. This group will provide your child with opportunities to meet other children and participate in field trips and sports activities. It will also provide you with support as a homeschooling parent.
