The Islamic Society of Greater Richmond (isgr.org) serves many purposes. The society provides space and direction for Friday prayers as well as Ramadan festivities. The society also performs outreach services in local jails and gives presentations to local houses of worship outside Islam in the Richmond area. Refugee relief is another project of the Islamic society. The Islamic Society of Greater Richmond runs a weekend Islamic school for Muslim children. It is also affiliated with the Iqra Academy of Virginia.
The curriculum in Richmond's Islamic schools consists of a mix of secular and religious studies. The Iqra Academy and Tawheed Prep teach the same secular studies as other schools in Virginia. They teach science, social studies, mathematics, Virginia, United States and world history, as well as computer science and language arts. The Iqra Academy and Tawheed Prep also teach the Arabic language and Islamic studies. As the language of the Quran, Arabic is an important component of an Islamic education. Islamic subjects include the Quran, interpretation of the Quran. Tawheed Prep focuses far more on students' Islamic identities and their faith; all subjects are taught within the context of understanding an Islamic identity and worldview.
