RN Tech Schools in Richmond, VA

If you have a compassionate personality and enjoy caring for others in need, a career as a nurse may be an excellent fit. The U.S. Bureau of Labor finds that the demand for professionally trained registered nurses (RNs) will increase by at least 22 percent through 2018. To become an RN, one needs to attain an associate or baccalaureate degree in nursing and sit the NCLEX-RN examination administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). There is currently only one accredited technical school in Richmond, Virginia that offers RN training. However, there are also two colleges that offer bachelor’s degree programs.
  1. J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College

    • The School of Nursing and Allied Health at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College offers an associate in applied science degree in nursing. Candidates must hold a high school diploma or GED that includes courses in biology, algebra and chemistry with a minimum grade of “C” in order to be considered for admission. Applicants must also complete the “pre-nursing and allied health career studies certificate” that consists of coursework in English composition, math, health science, developmental psychology and sociology with a GPA of 2.5 or better. Students are admitted three times each year, in May, August or January. Course topics include health assessment, pharmacology, nursing principles and concepts, maternal and newborn nursing, family nursing, mental health nursing and medical-surgical nursing.

    Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing

    • The Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing is a Catholic-affiliated non-profit health care organization that offers a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Applicants must hold a high school diploma or GED that includes courses in English, biology, chemistry, algebra and social science with a GPA of at least 2.5 or better. There are two annual enrollment dates: May 1 and October 1. Course topics include health assessment, clinical therapeutics, nutrition, adult nursing care, family nursing care, behavioral issues, nursing care for diverse populations, ethics, community nursing and pathopharmacology. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the College’s annual mission trip to Haiti or the Dominican Republic for course credit. Hands-on training is acquired through clinical rotations at a number of high-quality local hospitals and medical centers, including the Bon Secours Memorial Regional Center, St. Mary’s Hospital, Richmond Community Hospital and the Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center.

    Virginia Commonwealth University

    • A three-year Bachelor of Science degree is available at Virginia Commonwealth University. Applicants must complete one year of prerequisite coursework in sociology, psychology, statistics, anatomy and physiology, nutrition and English composition. An SAT score of at least 900 in the verbal and math sections, three letters of reference and a personal statement of interest are also required. Coursework includes health assessment, developmental psychology, human physiology, nursing concepts and technologies, microbiology, mental health nursing, adults nursing, research methods, nursing science, nursing for women and children, leadership, health care management and community health nursing.
